Unit 3: Insights and the Current Behavioral Balance
Lesson 5: How pressures help keep a wide view
People have a bias with how we think about pressures and behavior change.
- when thinking about increasing behavior, we gravitate towards strengthening promoting pressures⬆
- when thinking about decreasing behavior. we gravitate towards strengthening inhibiting pressures⬇
There is value in going against this bias to get innovative ideas and interventions; since other people have been susceptible to the bias, there is often unmet need on the other side. It’s useful to think about both promoting and inhibiting pressures when changing behavior – that’s why we use a diagram with an up and down arrow, to remind us of both sides. Remember, science is about actively debiasing.
Activity:
What are some of your identities?
When you think about how others see you and how you see yourself, are they different?
