Unit 2: Strategy and Writing Behavioral Statements

Before we can start a behavior change intervention, we need to be clear about what behavioral future we want. Who is going to be doing what when you’re successful?  How will you know? We articulate this using a behavioral statement: a very precise articulation of the world that we want.

What is a behavioral statement?

Note the difference in colors.  Target Audience, Motivation, and Behavior are always in the language of the people whose behavior we want to change; it helps us ground ourselves in how they view the world. Limitations and Data are in the language of the organization and are our chance to put in the specifics we need to stay aligned.

Activity:

Because writing a behavioral statement is a new skill for most people, you’ll need to help them under why it is important.

What is the purpose of a behavioral statement?

Practice how you would explain it to another person by recording a short video or audio.
